What Aristotle and Joshua Bell can teach us about persuasion - Conor Neill

  1. This video shows the importance of the three ingredients for persuasion classified by Aristotle’s. If we want to have a successful persuasive speech it is really important to incorporate in our speech the components of persuasion.

  2. These three elements are essential indeed, but learning how to use them properly is the big quest. For your Logos you can find numbers and statistics that make sense to your audience. Pathos is a little bit more difficult, building that emotional connection can take more than a simple story. And finally to me the most challenging is Ethos, not only looking professional but working on that trustworthiness from your audience and properly using your voice while you are nervously performing takes lots of practice to master.

    1. I share opinion on what you commented. All of them are extremely important when persuading. Logos is not a big deal if have done a good research. Pathos, on the other hand, is a little bit complicated since you have to build that emotional connection with the audience. It is important to involve the audice with the topic you are presenting. Ethos, the last but not least,is the most challenging point to perform. You have to take many different aspects into account such as reputation, credibility, trustworthiness and authority. If you lack of those aspects, you are not going to successfuly perform your speech. You really have to believe in what are saying in order to get the audice's interest and attention.

  3. I really agree with Max's idea: building emotional conection with the audience is not an easy task. It involves our creativity to touch people's feelings. The audience must somehow feel identified with us and our ideas. The greatest speaker is at the same a person who knows how to get people's heart and doing so prepares the proper environment to give his or her message.

Michael, It is difficult to know when people will be ready to receive the message, what happens to Joshua was that he was playing in a place in where people were walking and busy; although he was the greatest violinist, so, people were not able to receive the message. Also it is important the environment because it was a crowded place and people were stress. We can take that in account for business and also for presentations as Jose said we have to think about the audience and we have to be sure to make an emotional connection with the audience.

    3. I strongly believe in the Michael´s idea. If Joshua wanted to persuade people in order to pay him attention. He needed to use those three important elements of persuasion. If he realized that the problem was Pathos, he had to create something in order to develop a environment that helps him to persuade people A good speaker is the person who can create the appropriate environment no matter where he/she is. For example, when somebody starts to make a presentation in our classroom, if we do not feel related to the topic, we do not pay attention even we know we must to do it. Imagine in places we must not. If the goal is convince people, we have to create the environment where they feel interested. No matter we are in a classroom or in a subway.

  4. It is very difficult to get the audience attention that is why you should know the right way to use your ethos and logos correctly. Also is importat to conect your topic with the audience as soon as posible while you are speaking.
